RESUMO

The present study was developed to characterize, at the species level, 34 strains of Aeromonas spp., previously isolated from stressed tambaqui fish (Colossoma macropomum), to elucidate virulence factors, as well as their antibiotic resistance profile. Amplification of the gyrB gene identified the strains as A. hydrophila, A. dhakensis, A. caviae, A. veronii and A. jandaei. Bacterial virulence was evaluated by enzymatic assays for phenotypical production of hemolysins, proteases and lipases followed by the search for genes codifying the enzymes ß-hemolysin, serine protease and lipase. Phenotypical production of virulence factors was diversified and proteolytic activity demonstrated to be a common expression among the strains. On the other hand, the lip gene encoding extracellular lipase was the most expressed. Furthermore, A. hydrophila was the most prevalent species isolated from tambaqui in our work.

RESUMO

Novel photocurable and low molecular weight oligomers based on l-lactic acid with proven interest to be used as bioadhesive were successfully manufactured. Preparation of lactic acid oligomers with methacrylic end functionalizations was carried out in the absence of catalyst or solvents by self-esterification in two reaction steps: telechelic lactic acid oligomerization with OH end groups and further functionalization with methacrylic anhydride. The final adhesive composition was achieved by the addition of a reported biocompatible photoinitiator (Irgacure® 2959). Preliminary in vitro biodegradability was investigated by hydrolytic degradation in PBS (pH=7.4) at 37 °C. The adhesion performance was evaluated using glued aminated substrates (gelatine pieces) subjected to pull-to-break test. Surface energy measured by contact angles is lower than the reported values of the skin and blood. The absence of cytoxicity was evaluated using human fibroblasts. A notable antimicrobial behaviour was observed using two bacterial models (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli). The cured material exhibited a strong thrombogenic character when placed in contact with blood, which can be predicted as a haemostatic effect for bleeding control. This novel material was subjected to an extensive characterization showing great potential for bioadhesive or other biomedical applications where biodegradable and biocompatible photocurable materials are required.

The genetic diversity among three lineages of quail (Coturnix japonica) was evaluated by the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique. The lineages were selected for egg production and identified with a yellow, blue, or red ring fasten on their left foot. Six selected RAPD primers amplified 55 loci, which generated intense and reproducible bands on agarose gel. The results indicated polymorphism within and among the lineages. The Jaccard similarity average and the Shannon diversity index revealed high diversity values within the quail lineages. The Mantel test, unweighted pair-group method using arithmetic average (UPGMA) algorithm and dispersion of principal coordinates indicated significant genetic differentiation, although at low levels. Overall, the results suggest that the genetic diversity within and among the quail lineags from the State Universidade Estadual de Maringá are promising for use in breeding programs.

RESUMO

An association of schistosomiasis and endomyocardial fibrosis or cardiomyopathy has been suggested. Clinical, stool, abdominal ultrasound, electrocardiogram, and Doppler echocardiogram examinations were performed on 226 patients from an area endemic for schistosomiasis. The diagnosis of schistosomiasis was made in 152 patients (69%) but clinical, electrocardiographic, or Doppler echocardiographic evidence of a schistosome cardiomyopathy or endomyocardial fibrosis could not be detected in any patient.

RESUMO

To evaluate cardiopulmonary involvement in schistosomiasis mansoni, 246 patients from an endemic area of Brazil were examined; 152 had been previously treated for schistosomiasis. Based on stool examination and/or abdominal ultrasonography, the patients were divided into those with schistosomiasis (69%) and those in whom the disease was not present (31%). M mode measurements were similar in the 2 groups. Pulmonary pressure was measured by Doppler echocardiography; 25% of the subjects had pulmonary hypertension. Those with pulmonary hypertension had a higher prevalence of schistosomiasis (80%) than those without (64%; P = 0.03). No case of cor pulmonale was diagnosed by electrocardiography or Doppler echocardiography. The prevalence of pulmonary hypertension correlated neither with periportal fibrosis nor with prior treatment for schistosomiasis.
